Y'know, I resisted this for a long time, because 99.99% of livejournal is just murdtrous narcissism, but let's face it: the person who most enjoys what I write is _me_ (otherwise, I wouldn't write it, see?) so I am, in essense, just as shallow and "me, me, me, me, me, me, and also me" as every other poor tortured soul in this thing.
I'm here, I write, and sometimes it'll be relevant, but more often than not it's just gonna be me ranting into space, not particularly knowing or caring if anybody notices. Solipsism ho!
This is now the fifth draft of 'About You' on 26JUL06. It was the third draft (28AUG05) that it first occurred to me to actually, er, write some actual 'about you' this time.
I am, among other things, a full-time professional writer, since spring of 2002 or thereabouts. When people ask me what I do, the flippant answer is "I write manuals nobody reads about computer software nobody uses". It's more complex than that (I also do some process analysis and software design, but most of that is just research for The Big Book of Here's What This Software Is Supposed To Do, See) but the specifics aren't important. The point is that writing, to me, is work. This, and to a much larger extent usenet, are not. Writing involves envisioning and research and planning and more research and crafting and careful revision and fact-checking (yay, more research) and then editing by other people and more revision, blah blah yackety smackety. This? This is performance art. I sit down, and I type, and there isn't so much as a spell-checker. If you're looking for High Art, buddy, this ain't it. You want High Art, you gets to pay my morgage for at least as long as it takes me to produce it.
Also: I don't filter. I have one 'friends' page, and that's it. Please don't consider it an endorsement if you're on it, or a slam if you're not. I don't particularly like drama, and delete it when it shows up here. I don't mind anonymous comments, but I do screen everybody who ain't on my LJ-friendslist.
